A certain writer imbibed in some loco weed one evening and was hit by sudden inspiration, found a pen and paper, and wrote down the seminal snippet. In the morning he found the scrap of paper and the immortal idea: “There’s a funny smell in the house.”
I had a dream where someone told me the funniest joke in the world. I woke up laughing and remembered it. Unfortunately the joke was “The Sky is Blue.”
Kinda reminds me of a Taxi episode from 1981 – Louie’s Fling.
Louie has a one-night stand with Emily – a beautiful, but drunk, friend of Zena’s (Rhea Perlman). In the morning, sober, she tells him “You’re forcing me to be completely honest with you. In the light of day, you’re gross and disgusting.”
I keep a pad of paper and a pen next to the bed. If I get an idea in the middle of the night I write it down.
Why? Otherwise I can’t sleep trying not to forget the idea. But, in the years I have done this, I’ve never found the ideas to be good in the morning. (The only useful info has been stuff like “check if you are out of eggs”.)

Oh yes: “I must be forgetting something, it was perfect last night.”

Try working it out anyway, Andy. You never know, something good might come of it.

At least it’ll be a unique play.

(senses a metaphor for a certain kind of idea evolution in this cartoon)

Usually because, once you’re fully conscious, the night ideas don’t make sense. At least, that’s been my experience.

Inspiration and the muse can be fickle lovers.
