We had a Lt, j.g. – fresh out of Annapolis, on board our destroyer in ’Nam. He knew nothing. Could barely tie his shoelaces. Had the command skills of a squirrel. We had to listen politely to what he wanted us to do; then we went and did what was really needed.
USA should bring back the draft also. Better source of people than volunteers. My dad and 5 uncles served WW11. Dad awarded 6 campaign battle medals from Africa into Germany. He was in Italy also as he said he didn’t like the “Boot” but family had 4 purple hearts from WW11. Uncle Carlie shot down twice and POW Germany 18 months and died in 1950. Terrible war. All gave some – some gave all. I retired Air Force and had 3 sons to serve and several grands.
I always joked that I should have had velcro stripes on my sleeve. Being called to the C.O.‘s office was, " Come in Sargeant … Shut the door, Corporal … Sit down Private! "
If you had a Good Conduct Medal, you weren’t doing your job!
When I graduated from High School, it was suggested I join the Army. I went to College instead. One of the smartest decisions I’ve made. Not everyone is cut out for military service, after all.

It was what they called National Service in Britain. It was compulsory after WW II. They could do with bringing it back.

He once wrecked an entire motorized battalion. Unfortunately it was just an exercise on Salisbury plain; so instead of a medal he got KP.
