So far, today has been a totally normal day, with average tips and usual traffic, nothing at all out of the ordinary. I’m on autopilot for one of the last deliveries of the day: just one pizza to a regular apartment, maybe half a mile from the store.
The customer pays by card; we have mobile card payment machines. He hands me the credit card slip back with just the signature, no tip.
I briefly consider asking him to “fill out the total” (I almost always do when they leave it blank) but decide to just let it slide since it’s the end of the day and I’m doing okay.
Customer: “Hold up. Can y’all take tips?”
Me: “Uh, yeah, man. You can write it in or whatever; we get it all.”
Customer: “Hold up.”
He comes back and hands me a pile of bills. I see a FIFTY, a twenty, and a one. At first, I just shoot him a look like, “Nah, man, you already paid, remember?”, but I can see by his face that he knows what he’s doing. I’m not sure what made it out of my mouth, as I am kinda in shock.
Me: “Wha…? Seriously? You sure?”
Customer: Reassuringly “That’s all for you, man.”
I got back in my car and realized it was THREE HUNDRED AND FIFTY-ONE DOLLARS! I was able to take my mom out somewhere nice for Mother’s Day, AND I paid off my credit card.
People keep saying that money doesn’t buy happiness. I’d like to have enough money to test that theory and find out if it is true or not. I’m thinking five or six million dollars should do.

Blessed are they who realize they don’t have to be rich to be happy.

The greatest gift that I possess.
I’ve got no silver, I’ve got no gold,
But I’ve got happiness in my soul."

Happiness is the reward we get when we apply ourselves in earnest, especially when on someone else’s behalf.
