Act like you’re so happy to see them home. They might assume you were scared by something or someone and never suspect you did it.

Fred was protecting your clothes from clothes eating moths.

One time a bird fell down our chimney when just the dog was home.

They know Fred too well to suspect that he might have chased the burglar away before the burglar could take anything.
