This reminds me of Calvin’s “good duplicate” and how he and Calvin ended up fighting over their feelings for Susie. Calvin expresses his “minor crush” on Susie by deliberately annoying her. His “good duplicate” obviously had the same crush on Susie but expressed it through affectionate gestures that Susie thought were a trick.
