I’ve found in some cases if I’ve watched the movie before finding out it’s based on a book, I still enjoy the movie more, If I read the book and then see a movie based on it, I enjoy the book more.

Still … if there had been a book, the book would have been better than the movie.

That’s why we were all afraid when Jackson started the Lord of the Rings. Fortunately it turned out spectacular! sorry Tom.

The same book can be hacked by writers to make a dozen differently named movies with the same fundamental plot.

Exceptions I’ve experienced – the movie better than the book – are Mary Poppins (1964), Doctor Doolittle (1967), and Chitty-Chitty-Bang Bang (1968) – all from classic children’s novels. My theory on why that is is that the movie has to also entertain parents for 2 hours, vs. 20 minutes tops for the book. It also didn’t hurt CCBB to have Roald Dahl write the screenplay, and for any to have top-notch musical numbers.
