“Because your questions are so vague I can’t tell what you’re really asking, and I’m giving you the courtesy of trying to determine precisely what it is you need to know by seeking clarification.”
This is an old Jewish joke that I heard from a friend when I lived in Israel. “Why does a Jew always answer a question with a question?” “Why do you ask?”
I’m okay with answering questions with questions, mostly. I have a harder time when a simple question with a yes or no answer becomes a rambling story. Please, answer the question. Then tell the story if you need to.

Why can’t you be more decisive?I don’t know.
Why are you always so disagreeable?I am not!
Why do you always procrastinate?I’ll tell you later.

How about the next time he responds that way, she whacks his with a frying pan (particle man). They Might Be Giants did good songs.

I’d rather have questions I can’t answer than answers I can’t question.
