One time my husband did clip one claw too close. After that, Barney would submit to the ordeal, lying on his side, but would yelp with every clip. My husband finally started calling his name loudly as he clipped—no response. So instead of the sound of the clippers and yelps, the house was filled with “Baaaarrrney.”
Bribery has always worked for me. It is well known that good behavior equals 1 treat per paw, so four baby carrots are doled out. Fred, you must be a twitcher and a flincher. And yes, care is a must so as not to clip too close. That has to be painful.
Mom’s dog sounds like he’s dying when his claws get cut… when he gets treats he sounds ridiculous. Mom and my sister find it hard to continue cause they’re laughing so much at him. :J
These vet strips remind me of a Red and Rover strip which I read about five years ago and may have mentioned here before. Red told Rover that he had an appointment with the vet. Rover thought, “I like the vet. I like the staff.” In the last panel, he thought, “What I don’t like is the waiting room.” Red replied, “Is it my fault you had to queue up with cats last time?”
My one cat is fine with it, I can do his nails while he’s on my lap. My other cat needs to be wrapped up like a purrito each time. When we had our dalmatian, he had black toenails, and we had to trim very, very carefully as to not cut the quick.

Trimming my Lizzie’s claws is the most stressful part of the grooming process!

I suspect those of us with cats have it even worse

My cats are fine as long as I tell them all the latest gossip while trimming. Dog, however, is sure she is being murdered. Famous Shiba scream.

I may be confusing terms, since this is a vet. But in the UK I think “Surgery” means “Urgent Care” or “Emergency Room” in the USA. Not really sure.
