Having played some baseball in my younger days, I will tell you that the most amazing thing about that ‘54 catch was that the most difficult fly ball to judge is one hit directly at you and there is no depth perception to assist with judging it. Having had some of these go over my head, I can attest to this.
I wonder if MLB will retire 24 as it retired 42? That jersey was sold out at the SF Giants store before closing on Tuesday and is on backorder at the official MLB store on Fanatics.com. Thank dog I bought mine years ago when living in SF. Wore it Tuesday when I got the news and all day Wednesday. He brought joy to the ballpark every day that he played. Say Hey, Willie.
God and the Devil are arguing over baseball and which team would win in a game, Heaven or Hell. “We’ve got all the greats,” God says. “Ruth, Mantle, Williams, and now Mays. You don’t stand a chance!”
The Devil looked at Him and said, “I can guarantee a win. I’ve got McSherry, Klem, Conlan, Harvey, and a whole lot more.” “Who are those guys?” asked God. The Devil: “They’re umpires!”

His catch in the ’54 World Series is considered the greatest in MLB history.

wasn’t “the catch” over the shoulder?
