“The ocean is a desert with its life underground…and a perfect disguise above. Under the cities lies a heart made of ground…but the humans will give no love.”
No, Twonky, you are mistaken. I have captured the toon, and use Preview on my mac to go to max exposure setting.
What is shown is a beach, with water stirred by a previous wave break, with a breaking wave coming in (in both frames 2 & 4). Nicely, the pattern of water differs in the two frames. Beyond is the grey (in this view) sea with some dark patches. Beyond that, the horizon which has a dark sky which lightens toward the beach. It is very nice artwork, but hints of nothing but desolation.
Nice touch having Kirbee in the last panel, as she is the one who told Wally of the Great Green when they found the plant outside their window in Eden. But Wally was skeptical then. What has prompted him to change his mind?
And how will they get there? Is he going to summon up feral dittos and make another (much bigger) boat? With the attendent risk of the Eye showing up again? Or does can he make a set of diagrams connecting the beach to the Great Green (and how does he know it is the right symbol)?
I think he needs to get in touch with Marx and make clear that they cannot help Marx if the topsiders kill them. I’m sure he knows that these people are (mostly) ones that Marx chose to save.
At least some of the Topsiders are aware that “largely intact regions aren’t entirely uncommon” on the planet. Jim and Sarah (raccoon and reptilian) intended to find one before they hit the compacted dust and ended up in Unity. They say so in the strip from 03/20/2014. And…after hearing Amesworth and others talking about the mutation effects since then…reviewing Jim and Sarah’s conversion has a different significance (at least for me). Both of them had some memory reconfiguration problems, but Sarah seemed to have forgotten almost everything from before their conversion to Anthros—including why they chose to change in the first place. That’s shown in the strip from 03/06/2014. It sort of clarifies (for me, anyway) how she was able act the way she did. She…wasn’t very nice.
Kirbee’s home-spun “get your butt’s in gear” wisdom comes to the fore! I really think that “haint charm” that’s been hanging around Duffy’s neck has more significance than maybe I thought before.
Also regarding Kirbee…I don’t remember a backstory for her; she just showed up working in the reptilian nursery. I wonder what sort of human she was to start with…Witch maybe…or a Saint?

They’re on a bare rocky beach and the ocean is their best bet to get to Endtown. By what means?

With all of those ships falling from the sky, at least one of them should still be sea-worthy.

Remember way back when Kirbee found that plant growing just outside her window? The early Eden story. Maybe the war didn’t affect the whole world.

Correction: Kirbee told Wally about the Great Green on January 2, 2019.
“It’s an island that the war didn’t touch … It has forests and fields and a fresh water spring … Paradise …”
Thanks Diat, I was only off by a month… 8^(
