The root word of ‘vacation’ does not mean ‘rest and relaxation’. ‘Vacate’ means ‘leave the premises’. Get away from it all. Being able to relax and forget about it is your own problem.
I use a process called ‘garbage collection.’ In my mind, I push all memory of work into a plastic bag which is then dumped into a garbage can, put everyone from work on the do not disturb list, and, as far as I’m concerned for that week or two, I’m unemployed and having the time of my life!
Well, I once went with a friend to spend a couple days at her aunt’s house and from the moment we got there, I was regretting it. Her aunt and cousin were constantly at each other’s throats. The cousin hd issues where she was just always irritated and then they’d be yelling back and forth. At one point the aunt dealt a few blows. Anyway, I was actually wishing I were at work. And that was my McDonald’s job that I felt was more of a prison!

Eventually, it came to the attention of management that he hadn’t used any vacation time for a few years, and they basically told him, “Use it or lose it.” So he went away for a couple of weeks. When he came back he looked so much looser and relaxed — you could see it in his body language. That lasted for about 10 minutes. Then he was back to his old self.
