Holding the door open is frequently practiced here in mid-Alabama, regardless of the sex of the holder (or holdee).
I have had people just breeze on in with no show of appreciation of my politeness. For those I say “You’re welcome” in a rather loud voice. Hopefully it actually penetrates what passes for the “appropriate behavior” portion of their brain.
