I find it interesting that Joan couldn’t have found someone to babysit her son for the evening. She lives with/next door to her mother, her sister, a teenage niece, and Wally’s teenage nephew. I think she just wanted her son with her to give her an excuse not to pay full attention to Wally.
Whenever we had long drives, we would stop at some town’s local park for a picnic lunch. I always thought it was just our budget, but later my mom said it was so us kids could run free after sitting so long in the car. One grown-up would take the kids to the play area in the park while another grown-up would set out lunch. Genius!

She doesn’t discipline that child. Never does. She’s a bad mommy and the kid’s a menace.

Backyard is appropriate. After they’re done eating they can just wash it all down with the garden hose.
