They want cards, give them a gift card with a specific amount on it and tell them that is their budget for school shopping. Hold firm if they blow it. Or as my parents did I got a weekly clothing allowance. It wasn’t a lot but I could save up and use it for whatever I wanted. It wasn’t a lot and they paid for a winter coat but everything else was up to me from then on.
