Over the years, I have made my share of jokes that went horribly flat. I think this is one of Paul’s.
My worst jokes were often attempts to make myself not seem desperate. Sometimes people are so important to us that we try to downplay the relationship, out of fear that we’ll frighten the other person away. I think that’s what Paul is doing here.
