And if you get one, there is a chance your cats will hate it or be terrified of it. Keep the regular boxes as a backup; you don’t want to have to clean up messes in hard to reach places like under a dresser or behind the toilet.
We’ve had our Litter Robot® for a little over a month. It’s so helpful, we’ve decided to adopt a second cat. And our current cat is fascinated with its operation. Very few cleaning cycles have completed without Kat sticking her head inside it to see what’s going on, which causes the cycle to pause (paws?). Expensive, but well worth it!
Even with alway sharing my home with cats, and wishing (everytime I’m cleaning their cat boxes) I had a couple of the automatic kind, I too fear something would go wrong or they would just refuse to use them. If they had a money back guarantee I might think about it someday when I’m rich enough to afford one.
I’ve been using automatic litter boxes for about 20 years and I will never go back. With the automatic litter box you never walk into the house and smell the cat box.
With one cat, I change my litter once a month. My sister has multiple cats and has a litter box that is hooked up to her plumbing.
I don’t think you can use those with the natural litter like the cedar my friend uses. If your cat is ever traumatized she suggested to my daughter to use a certain brand made from natural sources that make him feel like he’s outside, the one called attract helped.
I had one of the early versions, and found that cleaning it out was just about as bad as cleaning a regular box. I hope that has improved. Now I don’t have cats, so I don’t know

The litter robot is real. And convenient. Tho a tad noisy. Best for a spare room or closet.

Scrooge McDuck was a miser,
A miser, I’ve been told.
He kept his cash in a cold, dark safe,
Never spent his coins or gold.

I’m surprised the folks are risking visiting during Covid… we certainly didn’t visit family until Sept or Oct 2021.

The automatic litter box is a device that is a long way from functional.

Mine like to hang their butts over the edge of the regular boxes. Have to use storage containers that are at least 12" deep to keep them in.
