Years ago I was an analyst, working for the US Army. One of my responsibilities was finalizing our analysis reports and making sure that they were accurate, clear and understandable by everyone who would be reading them [e.g., higher ranking military, sponsors, allies, Congress]. That meant making sure that all “jargon” and acronyms were explained.
The rule was that acronyms had to be spelled out at their first occurrence and included in an appendix and “jargon” had to be rewritten in normal language. One major study involved all the US Services and multiple authors from each. The number of acronyms was embarrassing, particularly since many of them had different meanings depending on which Service or even which area of a Service was involved. In one chapter summary, the same 4-letter acronym was used five times in two pages, with four different meanings. It took a lot of conversations with many different people to sort out an accurate, understandable rewrite of that section. [The acronym and term appendix was over 20 pages long.]
Ironically, one of the primary rules we had for preparing reports and briefings was KISS - keep it simple, stupid. Too bad many professionals think that means skipping words and explanations and throwing out 3 and 4-letter sounds. Try asking your doctor, PA, or nurse to explain one of the acronyms they fling at you and see if they can actually do it so you understand what they are talking about.
I would go in the office in the afternoon, and all I would hear was “STD”, “STD”. One evening I asked one of the engineers if there was ever anything else office people talked about other than, “Sexually Transmitted Diseases”. He drew a rather funny look on his face. The next day, he said, “S-D-P, S-D-P: Site-Development-Plan.” I was like, “Whatever”.
Problem is ADHD is not an acronym. Acronym is a collection of letters that are pronounced as a word such as NATO, ICE, SWAT. If you pronounced each letter ADHD, FBI, DEA it is an initialism.

I still have an older version – instead of an ADHD TV, it’s a BCHD TV.
