I was annoyed yesterday when I went to Hy-vee and there was a check at the self checkout. I initially thought she was there helping the person ahead of me with a problem, untill she turned to take some items from my cart. I said, “! thought this was self checkout.” She responded with a curt “No”. I pointed to the sign and said “it says so right there” “not today”. I was annoyed. I actually LIKE self checkout because I can bag my stuff how I like to. I was so annoyed I forgot to get my shirt at the laundry counter, and remembered when I got to my car.

If I go into a store and see that there is only self-checkout and no cashiers, I walk right back out without buying anything.

The machines are usually more polite. However, experience has taught me that if you are nice to the cashier, s/he is usually nice back.
