Too true to be funny – every now and then we have to stop feeding the songbirds in our garden until the local sparrowhawks stop using us as a drive-in for fast food.

We live on the coast and last week visited a scenic garden. When I asked why there was wire strung across the top of the fish pond, I was told it was so the gulls wouldn’t eat the Koi.

We had a heron that would sit on top of our pine tree most mornings before heading over to our neighbour’s backyard pond to catch some frogs and fish.

It’s nice for a birdbath to be a functional part of the ecosystem.

Sometimes I’ll see all the birds suddenly fly off from our bird feeder. a moment later the red-shouldered hawk comes by.

We haven’t seen many small birds since a pair of merlins started nesting down the street. They’re much smaller than an eagle though.

If you want to be picky, the only birds bald eagles prey on as a rule are much more substantial waterfowl.

I’ve had to shut off my feeder due to cowbirds. Not that they kill the other birds but I’m not spending money feeding them while it keeps all the other beautiful birds away.
