In the movie “Six Pack”, the oldest daughter was named Heather, but her younger siblings called her “Breezy”. Whenever someone would call her “Breezy” she would correct them with a firm, “Heather!” Whenever someone says “Breezy” (like on TV), my husband & I will turn to each other & say, “Heather!”
I have a compulsion to try to find single words to describe something to avoid using a phrase. Once in a conversation about indigestion, I said, “Yes, our palates and our stomachs often disagree” (rather than say “sense of taste,” which seems bulky). The guy gave me an odd stare.

Vocabulary is good for showing off, but it can often be used to keep the trite from becoming boring and even make the dull humorous.

The use of an extensive vocabulary is only showing off to one that is deficient in their own vocabulary.
