I’ve heard of blacksmiths, goldsmiths, silversmiths, and tinsmiths; but this is the first I’ve ever heard of a Ruby Smith.

There was a Laurel and Hardy comedy with a similar plot. Stan and Ollie were looking for the grandparents of an orphaned girl who was the daughter of their late friend Eddie Smith so they were looking up all the different Smiths in the phone book. The movie was “Pack Up Your Troubles” from 1932.

    In Red’s eyes, she’s a real jewel.

There was a recent strip which mentioned that Red’s brother Martin has his birthday on October 13. I mentioned that my sister has her birthday on October 29 and that she shares her birthday with the book character Jack Reacher.

My brother celebrates his birthday today as does another book character Harry Potter. Jack Reacher and Harry Potter both first appeared in books published in 1997.

We need to try something else, Red! Maybe Dad has an answer! Grownups have ways!

Time to ask Mom. I bet she has a list of the kids in the class and contact information.

I remember doing this and triangulating, singling out the ones with a nearby address.

An easier way to do it, Red…start with the first page of Smiths and see how many are on that page, then multiply that number by the number of pages of Smiths. Maybe not an accurate count, but a reasonable estimate.

Red, it’ll be easier to just count the pages and multiply the number of pages by the number of names are on each page, then add in the two odd pages

Red, you can rule out Snuffy Smith. Hope that helps.
