I interviewed with the CIA many years ago to be a photo analyst, went very well. They gave me an application the size of a phone book. I told them a few days later to deep six the application, didn’t want that intense digging into my life (I ain’t admitting anything ….).
I remember an analysis of Bond’s preference, but can’t remember who did it. Maybe Larry Niven. It turns out that if you shake the martini with ice in it, it accelerates the melting process. So what Bond is asking for is a weak/watered-down martini. Of course he always has to keep his wits about him.
When I applied to the U.S. Air Force Academy, I had to have security clearance check. The form said if you were under 18 to fill out the last three years of residences. I was only 17, so that is was I did. All the forms came back with instructions to go back to the day I was born. Since Dad was Air Force and had transferred frequently, I had to ask him about all the places I lived before I was five. So, before I was 18, I was cleared for “Secret”. I was not yet 18 when I resigned and got a regular life. :)
I was an engineer at Megacorp for 36 years, and had a Secret clearance the whole time. Every ten years it had to be renewed. In early days you had to give all the information to a secretary to type into a form. By the end, it was a computer program. If you were local, with no foreign-national in-laws or whatever, it was pretty routine. They never contacted any of the references I listed. You also had to get fingerprinted every time. I was happy in the latter ones when they got away from the “paper and ink” method. Instead you put some gel on your fingers and pressed them down on a glass plate so they could be photographed.

In the books, of course, Bond was well known for his substance abuse.

If recruited the application questionnaire is asked for only to confirm what they already know.

There’s no way anyone enjoys performing universal background checks.

The sex life check won’t be a problem. Don’t know about the drug use part!

Could any of these “security clearance people” pass their OWN tests?
