On you, however, they discovered plenty. The police will be here any minute.

Been there, sort of. My ex-wife’s father, one sister, and one brother worked for an aerospace firm and her mother had previously worked there as well and she was in security. They were anxious starting out because of my politics and organizations I had supported. They changed their tune when they found out my father had retired from the USAF with 3 stars on his shoulders.

My evil grandmother actually hired a PI to investigate my father before my parents were married. When she began reading the packet to her daughter, she just told her mother that he had fully disclosed both the deceased and divorced former wives and his father’s policy of permitting prostitution in the city where he was mayor. She had paid a good bit for an item of common knowledge and maybe 30 minutes research at the courthouse. I still have the letter where she told her mother to F-O.

This is based on a letter from a woman who took a DNA test swab of her granddaughter, to check if the little girl really was her son’s child. (It verified that she is.) Grandmom is shocked, SHOCKED, that her son was upset when he found out she’d taken this test.

Carolyn Hax let the old biddy have it: “You could have stayed out of it. You could have assumed the best of your daughter-in-law. You could have, assuming the worst, loved your granddaughter no matter her lineage, simply because your son chose to raise her as his own. But you wanted to know. So you crossed all the bounds of decency to find out. So what surprises me most about your letter is that you seem surprised now to be left out. That you claim to be hurt by the people you so willfully, unapologetically hurt.”

Some parents refuse to let go. And this mom is about to find out her son and his fiancee can sue her for invasion of privacy.
