She grabbed her skillet!

So sad. Especially because it’s so true.

I’m sorry ma’am, but those words are harsh, but they are the truth (my father used to say that the truth is hard as stone, cold as ice and ugly as sin)

The options are: fit the creativity to a practical job (e.g. ad copy), make creativity part time while working a regular job, Or totally abandon it. I don’t like that third option. My dad did very well with option 1: starting as a commercial artist (concept drawing, illustrating military manuals, layouts for advertising); it got him into marketing which got him up to the executive level.

My parents encouraged me to be a creative artist, but I took typing and shorthand in college to have something to fall back on when jobs were scarce.

Go mom! Hit the narrator with the skillet! They deserve it!!!

Or maybe Mom could change her definition of “best future.”

Even the most successful creatives have gone through rough patches, look at Thoreau or van Gogh.

Creative people think outside of the box and should be content to live there, too. Don’t measure your success by others’ standards, which can be skewered to manipulate you and encroach on your passions. As long as you have the basics and integrity, you’re successful.

Starving artist sounds romantic 600 years after you’re dead. :)
