I had to look it up. Apparently this style was made popular by jazz flutists in the 1940’s and 1950’s. The bit of hair made it more comfortable for them to hold the flute against their chins. Apparently the musicians (or maybe the Blues Brothers — John Belushi and Dan Ackroid) named it.
