Several years ago, my son bugged us to get him rollerblades for his birthday. He pestered us for at least a month prior to his birthday. My wife and I found a really nice used set of ‘blades. The boy was delighted! After a month he had gotten pretty good with them, which was not a surprise since he had been rollerskating since he could walk. One evening he had been a real problem all day, so I told him to get his blades on. While he was doing that, I got our Golden Retriever on her leash. I met my son outside handed the least, then I clapped my hands and shouted go! The golden took off down the block with my son screaming and trying to stay upright on the blades. That was until she got to the corner, and as she had been trained to do, she sat down, waiting for further instructions. The stop was so sudden that my son did not have time to try to stop but went zipping by her, until he reached the end of the leash and his forward progress was quickly terminated.I waited until my son was back up on his feet before I called the dog back. As you can imagine it was like an instant replay. The golden was smart. As she bounded into the driveway, she stopped about halfway up the drive and sat down in such a way that my son would whip around her and land in the grass of the front lawn.I didn’t have a problem with for a couple of days and he straighten up his act when I would ask him he wanted the golden to take him for a drag.
When my daughter was young she once thought it would be fun to wear her roller skates and take our dog Sandy (my first dog son) for a walk—but something caught his eye and he took chase . . . fortunately she dropped the leash quickly or she would have been dragged along until he stopped. She wore sneakers for subsequent walks!
I had a wagon with metal rims on wood wheels. The Evening Star in D.C. had those for paper boys. Loved that wagon. Going down a hill , you would just turn handle and wagon would slide to a stop.
I like that we can see the news paper bag, but wouldn’t it be easier to not have to reach across the body and keep the bag on the side with the throwing arm?
In the 1970’s I worked with a guy that was 71 as he told me in the 1920’s he worked as a mail boy in a big factory of around 3000 employees in our city and he said they got paid for the whole day for delivering the mail even though it only took them 4 or 5 hours to deliver the mail cause they wore roller skates. Always though that was funny.
I had a pair of strap-on roller skates, but with the newer nylon wheels. I used them for delivering newspapers twice, but the problem was one customer was on the second floor of an apartment building with outdoor concrete steps supported by a single square iron tube. I must have woken up the whole building trying to walk up and down the stairs with the skates on. I took them off the second time I tried this, but ultimately it wasn’t worth it.

… I rode my bicycle around my route last night
I roller-skated door to door at daylight
It almost seems like my route is so long
I’m okay alone, but you’ve got something I need
… Well, I’ve got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You’ve got a brand-new leash
I think that we should get together
And try them out to see
I’ve been riding this route a while
You’ve got something to help me
Oh, I’ve got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You’ve got a brand-new key
… I ride my bike, I roller-skate, don’t drive no car
Don’t go too fast, but I go pretty far
For somebody who don’t drive
I’ve been all around the world
Some people say I’ve done alright so far…
Oh, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah
… I asked my mother if you could go to
She said, yes, to watch out for you
Oh, sometimes I think that you’re the key
I’m okay alone, but you really help me
… Well, I’ve got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You’ve got a brand-new leash
I think that we should get together
And try them on to see
La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la
La-la-la-la-la-la-la
Oh, I’ve got a brand-new pair of roller skates
You’ve got a brand-new leash

I’m thinking that getting Rover to Whoa is the main drawback in this situation.

Rover looks hungry after all that work. He is eyeing the toast on the table very hard.
