I remember Art Donovan doing some chats on sports talk radio back in the ‘90s. He described a lot of things that Jerome’s grandpa is describing, sand the decapitation. Donovan said eye gouging, knees to the cojonnes, blows to the head, guys with iron rods inside of casts bashing opponents, etc… were all part of a typical things which would occur on the gridiron back in his days during the ’50s with the Colts…. Times have changed, probably for the better when you look back at all the former NFL players who are suffering from dementia or have already died of it…..
I think the entire premise (and promise) of contact sports is the violence and danger, in some cases, both on the field and in the stands. It’s just gotten to the point where the players are huge enough to do real damage to each other more often.

Yeah, I remember seeing it on an old Simpsons episode. The guy’s head sailed through the uprights too!

Ah, another strip featuring Jerome, Coach George and Grandpa Oliver. I’d consider them breakout characters.

I do not know about now, but it was far worse for Canadian kick returners. Some called it a suicide mission.
