    The full-color strip:

I got my start in the newspaper industry at the very bottom, doing circulation to pay for college.

At one point when the local economy was rough we ceased doing most forms of residential household delivery and instead labeled & bundled the newspapers for collection and distribution via the post office.

The managing editor at the time worked the print schedule so that if all went well the papers would be at the office at 3 PM, the goal being that if everyone showed up and met a pie-in-the-sky production rate we could get them all labeled, bundled up, and off to the post office before the main lobby closed at 4:30.

Normally it was me and two other people doing the labels so that a fourth person could pick them up. But one day, the other two people who were on schedule no-showed. That left me to try and process all of them by myself.

At 4:30 the managing editor loudly declared to the office that he was going to his favorite watering hole, walked past my desk, and with all seriousness in his voice told me to “work faster”.

Very few people shed any tears when a new managing editor was put in place a few months later.
