if you’ve eve seen the movie 55 days at peking-it always seemed a little contrived how all the relief forces arrived at the same time, until i learned hat was how i happened. there was a debate as to who would rescue the city first and so the diplomatic solution was different armies would assault different gates to the city, the problem was the japanese, the only non-white army they wanted to prove they were the peers of the western troops and attacked two gates, forcing the russians off their gate so they went for another, creating a domino effect until the british. They broke the pattern. It is recorded in the regimental records of the Royal Welch Fusiliers that we got into the city by attacking the ‘water gate.’- see cartoon above.
