Might be hard to believe, but I’ve been a member of several unions, for many years. First, when I worked in a factory. (Yes, I began my illustrious career as a general laborer in a cardboard box factory.) Then, when I worked at a newspaper, as a member of the Writers Guild. And I have indeed walked a picket line. I’ve seen the good and bad of unions. Alas, now, there is no cartoonists union. But if we did, think of the signs we’d make.
In Canada, the proper spelling is labour, but it’s still pronounced like the Americans – “lā’ bər”, except for Brits and some immigrants, who say “lā’ bōr” or “lā’ boor”.
I worked for major international corporation for several years. During a “quality drive”, they displayed large color posters throughout the facilities. The poster text had “professionalism” mis-hyphenated. The personnel guy tried to tell me that was how it was hyphenated in Europe (no, it wasn’t). Such a joke.
One of our power plants tried to unionize because of the horrible management. Corporate went on anti-union campaign which consisted of “Unions bad, company good” and never addressed the workers’ concerns. I got in trouble at a site meeting when I dared to ask why the other plant wanted to unionize and how the company was addressing the issues.

I would never want to go near a hospital on Labor Day. That’s the day the maternity rooms are full.
