One really smart dog we had would fetch for awhile, but then he would bring the ball back, give us a look, and throw his head (and the ball) sideways for us to go fetch.
I do not know about expecting a different results. Our puppers expect it to have the same result. We throw, they bring back, they are told the absolute truth, that they are the best dogs in the world with many head and ear rubs, they give us the ball and it all starts again.I think if they got a different result they would be upset.

My dog loves to play catch, he will bring the toy back to be thrown again, but will not give it up!

My dog always said, “If you want it, you go get it.”

Mine won’t give it back, but if I have two and hold the other one up to throw, she drops the first at my feet, ready to chase the second.
