When my kids room got to be more than I could handle AND they refused to do anything about it, I helped.I went in with a large plastic trash bag and started picking up.. all that crap they refused to put away was gone.I could give it back later.
My mom gave us one chance to clean up the mess. Then, when we were out, the “Kangaroo” cleaned and took everything that wasn’t where it belonged. The more you needed something reflected on the highest price to be paid to the kangaroo for her services. If it was something not essential for existence, it was much cheaper. School books and school clothes ranked the highest, second highest was library books (with the kangaroo cost higher than the late fees imposed by the library). We learned quickly to clean.

I never had my own room until I went to college. It was six by ten and didn’t meet the state requirements for a prison cell.
