So a month or so ago we learned that John has eight people working for him - nine, if we count Elly. So wouldn’t there be another employee who would be able to pitch in when Jean was gone for a few hours or a day or so? Especially as Lynn is neither certified nor qualified to do Jean’s work.
So what happened with the Toronto/Buffalo Bills bit?
babsbybend - do you mean Elly? Lynn did work with her husband in his early clinics when they were living way out in a small community. So she understands working with dentists. If you mean Elly I think it mentions that she did assist him before Micheal was born.
Hey, I’m a female! And speaking on behalf of us, I have to say…John is a jerk! Besides, he has nothing to complain about. WE’RE the ones who really have to go through all that stuff! Am I right or am I right?
Men really think they have it rough because they have to put up with a woman when she’s having those issues, PMS, menopause, monthly cycles, pregnancy etc. Oh poor babies! they’re only experiencing it second hand so they should be thankful. Now be a good boy John and shut up before Elly clobbers you.
These charactes do have realistic depth. If all you are going to do is gripe. go to another strip and cease saying critical, in a mean way, things about this one.
this strip was very timely for me when I was a young single mom raising two kids the same age as Ellie’s and working in a “traditionally male” field. You’d have been shocked how chauvanistic these men were in the late 1970-80’s. And in California!
all the men I worked with felt the same way as John and they had no problem telling me all about it…….
this strip at least made me feel better about myself at the end of the day
not the right thing to say with your wife agreeing to help out for a few days at the office, she might just tell you to take her home after that comment
babsbybend: i could care less if the bills move to toronto, and i live near buffalo
The Buffalo Bills comments are interesting. Buffalo and Toronto are a short drive from one another. And Toronto already has the Maple Leafs. Can’t pictrure the Bills moving to Toronto, as such. Doesn’t make sense.
Towns that DO need an NHL franchise would definitely include Quebec City and Winnipeg. Oops! Come to think of it, they both did at one time….
As for today’s John and Elly exchange, let’s see a show of hands. Come on now, how many out there are smiling at John’s comments? It’s okay, I won’t tell….:-).
I don’t find what has been put into John’s mouth funny at all. It reminds me of all the hard work that had to be done to educate men - a lot of their attitude was simple ignorance.
But the fact does remain that when men said things like this in the ’60s and ’70s, you couldn’t really blame them, because you couldn’t expect them to know. After a certain number of years, you do start to think, well, now they should have some idea of what’s involved.
And there’s a lot left still to do. The US could start by ratifying the ERA (Equal Rights …something… Amendment? that sounds right).
John’s attitude was very common back in the 80s and even into the 90s. These guys are still in the workforce. Does anyone think their attitudes have changed? Not me. I had a boss at a major big box book retailer who, in the year 2000, was still very vocal about the fact that women should not be in the workforce until their children were in school. Notice he only postulated that theory for females. Men with young kids could work outside the home….
mroberts88 - I guess I should have been a bit more specific. Remember when the Expos relocated to Washington DC, because the going consensus in Montreal was that most folks in town are devoted to the Montreal Canadiens and didn’t have time for the Expos?
By that same token, friends I know in Toronto attend Leafs games regularly and occasionally travel to Buffalo to see the Bills, but tend to comment that they probably would not attend regularly if the team moved across the water.

Hey John! Watch out! Be careful what you say or Elly will become upset.

Um, John, remember who you’re talking to. That WOMAN might just decide to leave you high and dry without an assistant.

Still think they’re better than the Lions. 0-16, all I need for my case. As for John, really? Again?!?

Why can’t these WOMEN understand why we only pay them 7/10ths what we pay a man.

Right on!! Let him try to hire a MAN to do the same work he has hired WOMEN to do at their pay scale.

johnny, to be honest, ANY team is better than the Lions. I have a question though, if you could have any team in Toronto, which would it be, and why?
