I think this is an age old problem for mothers as they never get a break, but the working male thinks it is a break being at home all day….with the children?
I guess Lizzie had a hard day too. (I can’t believe that’s in the comic!)
wndrwrthg, I’m guessing you’re saying that to start a fight, but mothers can’t seem to win. If we go to work, we get criticized, and if we say anything about how hard it is at home, we get criticized. We all love our children and we just try to do the best for them, but we all have hard days.
It’s the human condition. We ALL want a break at the end of our day, to put up our feet- whether we’ve chosen to be a SAHM or a dentist (both hard jobs). And with kids, the silence and toy-free zones are hard to find, much less a spouse who feels his or her day was easier than ours and helps us relax.
Suitable arrangement here has been to let hubby decompress for 30 mintues or so when he gets home (drive home is not relaxing) and then he’s more than willing to jump into the fray at home. Sometimes it’s just hard switching gears. Makes the days when it’s not an option for him to take time to decompress that much easier for him to tolerate. Having a “kid-free, toy-free” zone for him to decompress in lets him know I care about him and that makes him even more willing to stick to the time limit or less. :0) Win, win.
When it was just my step-son, I told him I need 20 mins in my room when I get home from work. Then I can be with him and listen and talk and do whatever it is that he wants to do. Just need the 20 mins first. Worked like a charm.
i know what it is like to be a working dad who had to double as a mom, my son was 13 when his mom passes away, and since that time i have had a whole new respect for what she did…….
John, as all husbands work hard all day and deal with stress. Home is where he should be able to relax. Ellie needs to understand her place as the wife. She needs to follow the “Good Wife’s Guide”:
elly: john, get your butt off the couch! there’s dishes to wash, farley’s pooped on the floor, michael lost his car under the fridge again, lizzy is on a hangover, SO GET UP AND HELP ME!!!!!!
If he wanted to come home to a quiet house with no toys, then he should have not gotten married. If he expects understanding for a tough day, then he should have informed the wife that he had a really hard day. She cannot read his mind. All she sees is him coming home and laying down on the couch. She also sees the little one drinking his beer right next to him. That is a really aggravating situation for a mother. A least he should have kept his eyes open when the kids were around and kept an eye on his beer.
those who don’t have a marriage or kids or the first to say that
Elly deserve all her hardship for picking the choice of mother/wifehood. To those I like to say, QUIT READING MARRIAGE AND CHILDREN COMICS. You don’t understand and you never will, and quit commenting on things you don’t understand. They only people who understand this are Moms and Dads, they are the ones getting a smile or laugh out of it.
For those who have never been married and have no children, you have NO concept of the JOY a family and children can bring into a life. Sure there are problems, but a family is to share life with.
Since it’s late, no one will see this and I will have to repost it tomorrow!

Susan001, not me, no. But then my kids are pretty well behaved, even the teenagers ;)
On your last response, sorry to hear you have had such bad family experience! It doesn’t have to go on, that vicious cycle can be broken. My brother-in-law comes from a pretty twisted family with broken marriages, endless half-siblings and hostility all around; until he got to know our family he didn’t believe there was anything to family life. He and my sister have now been happily together for 15 years, no breakup in sight.

Lucky John, he gets to be off work; Elly never is.

If Elly didn’t want the job, she should have never applied for it.

Did Lizzie drink John’s beer can? It looked like Lizzie drank his beer can. Oh my goodness! :-\

Just because Ellie has had a hard day doesn’t lessen the validity of John’s exhaustion though does it? Ellie could at least empathise!

OMG! Did you read the retro-housewife stuff gaebie left? (I AM a retro-housewife, by the way)
My printed input (in the red text) would be a wee bit stronger.
The black text (true article) made me want to spew!
