Aren’t pinatas used basically at Christmas time?

Well, that deserves a smack.
Since I’ve never had to whack a piñata, I’m not sure whether success means you’ve scattered the contents all over the room. Is that the way it works in real life?
In other pressing concerns of the day, are used piñata husks recyclable?
