the punch line could have been “Our O-line wasn’t very good, that’s why I was a running quarterback!”

Among the colleges where I taught was one who said it was the first college to use the forward pass after the rule change.

Forward passes were legal before the rule change, but in the case of an incomplete forward pass possession of the ball changed to the other team. So there weren’t a lot of passes. Once the team in possession kept the ball after an incomplete pass the game changed quickly. 1906 was when they changed a bunch of laws… Outlawing the mass plays that killed a number of players every year and almost got football made illegal.

Da Bears traded their running quarterback, and got one that throws and scampers.

Legalized? I thought somebody just realized the rules didn’t prohibit it and started using it.

Brock Purdy is better at that than some think. Tre Ford and Chad Kelly are pretty good as well.

Running quarterbacks have been the “next big thing” for years. They tear up the field for a couple of years, then they get hurt, the defenses figure them out, or both. Then we’re back to pocket passers.
