I was always a poor student, I didn’t like school one bit. Mom and Dad got on me about it in high school, so one year I was on the Honor Roll all four report cards, just to show I could do it. They accepted it, the guidance councilor did not. I even failed photography class twice, and I was later employed as a photographer.
Son struggled in school until Sophmore year. Then he discovered he needed good grades to get to college to go into field he wanted. A and B student there on. Now he is junior in college. There is hope.
The biggest mistake of my life was bringing home a straight A report card one time, first semester of high school. Ever after that, if I had a B, my dad would ask why it wasn’t an A; and heaven help me if I had a C. With all the teen-rebellion stuff, it took me a few years to realize, I get the grades I want. If other folks are happy, great — if not, sounds like a personal problem.
I was basically a B student (other than gym, music and art where C or D was more likely – but my parents always said that they don’t count). Why a B student? I am lazy and did not bother to study or do more than was needed.
I met my husband in college and we had a couple of classes together. He would see me in the yearbook office (both on the staff) and I would be writing a paper which was due for the class in about half an hour. He would spend hours studying and I would not even read the assignments.
One day he finally asked me how I was getting by if I did not read the assignments, study, etc. I explained that I just “knew it”. It was somehow in my head without my having to read the assignments, etc. Not as true as much as I have aged, but still is true to a large extent.
If I studied I would have A’s – but why did I need more than B’s was my thought.

Don’t lie to your father, Baldo. Keep studying and you’ll keep getting good marks.

Maybe showing Papi your “once in a lifetime ‘A’” on an English essay WAS a mistake, Baldo.
Unlike Gracie, Baldo’s skill set doesn’t seem to favor getting As in English, and and Sergio, like most parents, seems unduly impressed by grades.

Oh, dear, DID he cheat, or is he only thinking of saying that because he doesn’t want the pressure to repeat?

PS: He won’t get an A on an English paper if he keeps spelling “should” that way. Hope it’s only a texting contraction.

Just text him using the same spelling of “should”, that “shud” do the trick.
