Elizabeth uses the horse riding term “broken” which April interprets personally. Other choices Lynn Johnston considered included:

Elizabeth: I think you need a saddle, April.

April: Aypo’s butt is sad enough.

Elizabeth: I think you need a halter, April.

April: Edgar did not halt for Aypo. He ran off.

Elizabeth: I think you need a stirrup, April.

April: We are not eating soup. Why Aypo need to stir up?

Elizabeth: I think you need to work on your dressage, April.

April:Aypo thinks Edgar would look funny in a dress.

The term is “broke,” not broken.

This strip reminds me of a cartoon I used to see on TV—can’t remember the name of it, but it centered on Native American toddlers. One of them was trying to ride a burro who stubbornly refused to move, and at one point, sat on his haunches and threw his rider—just as Edgar did here. At the end, when the other babies were asleep, that one was STILL trying to manage the burro, LOL. That toon isn’t aired on TV any more—it’s not PC.

If she would’ve had spurs, maybe she could’ve gone 8 seconds.

Did the same thing to my kids when riding time was up and they didn’t want to get off.

Sorry April, it’s your own fault, and Edgar dealt with it!

I have a link to this comic off my website, and there’s a scene where April is dressed as Little Bo Peep and Edgar as a sheep.

Four years old on a gold palomino

I sat up tall with my face to the wind

I’d seen the rodeo cowboys in Reno

So I dug in my boot heels and pulled on the reins

And Blaze, he took off running

He threw me down off the side

Then my sister picked me up once again

Said get back on that pony and ride

Get back on that pony and ride

So lift up your head, girl, I know how you’re feeling

You say you won’t ride with a chance you might lose

I’v broken up with Anthony and my head is still reeling

My heart and your pride have been shaken and bruised

Like Blaze, I took off running

Love threw me down off the side

But stand up again, shake it off if you can

Get back on that pony and ride

Get back on that pony and ride

I’m not saying I’ll forget what I lost

    I suppose there’s a purpose in pain

What we make of ourselves has a cost

And it’s paid every time we take hold of the reins

So dust off your blue jeans

    Get back in the saddle

Losing’s a place to start over again

Gettin’ back up there is half of the battle

And love like a pony should race with the wind

And like Blaze, it takes off running

It may throw you down off the side

Stand up again, shake it off if you can

And get back on that pony and ride

Get back on that pony and ride

From the look of it she is much too big to be sitting on the dog and could injure him.

Yesterday Edgar wasn’t on his feet. Did he really stand up with her straddling him? I don’t see how she could have mounted him otherwise.

If she wants to ride so bad, let her ride a mechanical bull. On slow setting of course.

First of all, she should have been told no riding the dog. She could have broken its back or hurt it in other ways, especially the way she was kicking him in his sides!! The could have been, or could be, one expensive vet visit!!

Maybe a monster would be a more appropriate Halloween costume for Aypwo
