It’s not a bad idea if you think about it. 3 pts if it’s made, -2 if it misses?

The giving up the ball at the spot of the kick already makes it increasingly risky the longer the field goal attempt. Funny thing is if one team misses a 63.5 yard field goal, the other team can try a field goal of the same length in the other direction on the next play!

Watched the coach send in the kicker for what would be considered a distance too long to try. Kicker made valiant effort. Fell short. IMHO they shouldn’t put attempts that long in the kickers’ stats.

How about, instead of minus 2 points for a miss, plus 1 point for the other team….then in a tie game when you try a field goal to win the game, you better not miss or other team wins by one point.

Rams-Bears game yesterday. Of 11 kickoffs, 10 went unreturned as too deep into the end zone. NFL needs to move kickoffs back 10 yards or so if they want a return game.

Don’t talk to the Jets about kicking field goals!

The success of kickers from 50+ yards just proves what I’ve been saying for years; Pete Gogolak is one of the most significant people in the history of football, and the most underrated. What Gogolak showed was that soccer-style kickers were more accurate and had more power. Look at all the rule changes to kicking situations that heve been implemented in the 60 years since his debut with the Bills.

Gogolak was also the catlyst for the AFL-NFL merger, but that’s another story.

Philly Eagles had a kicker named David Akers who never missed. If it was under 40 yards they’d concede the kick and move on.

Jets—Broncos game reminds me of the famous crack about the 1945 World Series—-with the rosters decimated by WW2 drafting, somebody asked a famous sportswriter who would win and he said “I don’t think either team will be able to win”

I’ve always maintained that the longer a field goal is , the fewer points should be awarded. The basic goal of the game is to move the ball to the opposing team’s goal line, right? So you shouldn’t get the same points for only making it to the 35 yard line as you would for making it to the 5. Field goals 20 yards or less should get 3 points, 40 yards to 20 yards two points, beyond that one point.

Spot the ball where it was downed. If out of bounds, within 5 yards of the sideline.

Not the middle of the field where the hash marks now dictate.

I heard the same comments about changing the rules when soccer-style kickers first started in American football.

Bring over CFL rules. Singles, no fair catch. Run it out of the end zone or concede a point. And resize all the fields.
