So, respond in like kind.

The doggy equivalent to flipping the bird.

Pretend there was somebody on the other side of him.

He could be doing both, as in, “Hi, I’m leaving a note for you. Check it out later when you can. I’m looking forward to your reply.”

Well doggies says hello in the hindside anyways so yeah why not a hind leg hi waving.

Doggie on undercover mission so he no recognising you but he is leaving a secret message for you there.

Could be canine equivalent of a Braveheart moment!
