    “Mad as a Hatter” describes hatters who, back in the day, used liquid mercury when stiffening the felt while making hats. They would inhale the fumes, or absorb it through their skin.

    Even small amounts of mercury causes health problems – psychosis, excitability, and tremors. These symptoms were common among hatters – hence the phrase…
