This is not where I expected the story to go, but considering the implementation of one of the Three Theological Virtues, I’m on board! (Not that I wouldn’t be. I’m an avid follower of this comic, as you folks already know!)

I am reminded of the movie “The Incredible Journey” about 2 dogs and a cat that were separated from their owners and set out to find them in their new home. One of the dogs was aged so it was iffy if ALL of them would manage to survive the trip. The last scene is rather a tear jerker. If you haven’t seen it, you should. Michael J. Fox does the one dog’s voice and Sally Field does the cat. I forget who did the aged dog.

Remember, Buckles is only visiting, so he may not know if or when Hope returns. He just found out about his brother and sister.

That is sad to think that the farmer gave the mother away but kept them. I HOPE she finds her way back!!

My dog was like Buckles’ mother. She had several litters of puppies before I adopted her. She was 6 years old, and her last litter of puppies were 8 weeks old. When I took her to my vet for medical care, something she had been lacking, he was delighted that I had another calm, quiet beagle. She fell asleep on my legs while we waited in the exam room. (This former vet of mine always told me he hates beagles and swears the others could jump up to the ceiling, but mine were surprisingly calm.) I asked him what I was supposed to do with “these,” since she had been feeding her babies until right before she was handed to me. He made a “hm” sound and then stuck his hand under her belly and wiggled his fingers as he petted her and told me to “just play them like an instrument.” He also told me they would probably get much smaller. They did, and she is sometimes called a boy, even though she, as a beagle, has quite short fur. I was sent pictures of her puppies and even recently, pictures of a litter of ten little beagle great-grandpuppies of hers. My dog is now 14. Someday I will get another beagle from her line. That will be a bittersweet day, since I am only allowed to have one dog where I live.
