Shel wrote some very successful songs also, including “Put Another Log on the Fire”, “A Boy named Sue”, and most of the songs for Dr Hook and the Medicine Show including “Cover of Rolling Stone”.

He also did cartoons for Playboy. Shel was a most ingenious man!I mainly love his children’s poetry. My kids heard them so much that they memorized them.

Our society is DESIGNED to make us have many occasions for screaming.

Still doesn’t explain why he had to make faces all week. Or why Mrs. Olsen would have believed him and reacted that way.

“The Devil and Billy Markham” leaps to mind as definitely not on the kiddy menu. “The Perfect High” is a personal favorite.

I always liked “Uncle Shelby’s ABZ Book.”

He lived at the wrong time… today his books wouldn’t be banned in school!…

Or the moment a parent went to one of Bob Saget’s comedy routines.

The whole family-friendly thing was pretty much against type, you see….

I remember when I found out Shel Silverstein did kids books.

Or the moment a Protestant discovers that Martin Luther wrote a huge book about wiping out the Jews.

One of my reasons for loving this comic strip is that I learn something new all the time. Thanks for the references to the literary works.

Don’t say anything bad about Shel Silverstein!

Shel was inducted into Country Music Hall of Fame. I particularly laugh at his “Father of a boy named Sue.”, a song which Mr Cash did NOT record….

Sort of like when I was enjoying reading the Xanth series (something did seem a bit fishy) and then found out about some of the other stuff the author had produced.

When I’m in a bad mood or depressed I listen to Shel Silverstein’s albums. “Folk Singer’s Blues” is a favorite. “What do you do if you’re young and white and Jewish?” Or “I Was Stoned And I Missed It”, “The Great Smoke Off”, and “25 Minutes To Go”.

Many of us have heard of Shel Silverstein, myself included. But I don’t know enough to follow this joke.

Shel’s “The Giving Tree” still causes arguments among parents.

He wrote for Playboy.

Personally, I like Dr. Seuss’s “The 7 Lady Godivas”

“I Got Stoned and I Missed It” is my favorite Shel Silverstein song.

I think the stuff Tom Lehrer did was a forerunner. Shel was a fan of Tom Lehrer.

That would also require a straitjacket.

Or, of course, Roald Dahl and his uncle.
