No TV at home is adversity..!!

Sarcasm and reality … They can’t be separated

Looks like Calvin has no friends other than Hobbes, who also has no TV.

It might be an idea to put off getting a new TV - for maybe 10 or 12 years? Think of how big, strong and smart Calvin could be.

Wonder how long Mom and Dad can hold out. Calvin will have a lot of time on his hands without a TV in the house. Just think of all the mischief and Hobbes can get into.

TV withdrawals are hard for us all Calvin. Now eat your dinner.

I can imagine Calvin saying to Mom in the last pane,”In that case I guess you are happy about the theft.”

Calvin would have preferred that his homework was stolen instead of the TV.

This can’t last very long with Calvin!

I think about a thousand synapses fried all at once, there.

Like theres any other choice .. even if the TV hadn’t been stolen!

Reality sets in … Calvin without TV means Calvin with a LOT OF TIME ON HIS HANDS. Am I the only one who thinks that this bodes ill?

I can get along without TV just fine….. But take away my computer or internet connection and I would look a lot like Calvin in the last two panels. And the smoke coming out my ears would evidence MY fried synapses.

Good morning to all! Poor Calvin. And later… Poor Mom.

Ours were never (almost never) allowed TV on school days (Sunday night to Friday morning). We limited their watching on weekends as well. Since they all graduated in the top 10% in school have to wonder if reading & using imaginations to help amuse themselves may have played a part. Never had problems with wanting the TV as a “sitter” We did play a lot of family games, and we have great relationships with them all still though they are not close by physically.

Gee, he gets to live my childhood.

Yes Marg, can’t fight fate, this is a true statement! If I’d tell you, what hapened here, you’d make big eyes!

This is why we have not had TV in 16 years. Kids are used to doing non-television related activities.

This is starting to sound like an inside job.

Avolunteer, did you and your spouse also cut down on watching TV, or did you restrict TV just for the children? It would be difficult to restrict the children’s TV watching if the parents were not setting a good example, wouldn’t it?

Mom’s thinking “the TV will be the last thing in the house I get replaced”. With no TV, wonder what kind of adult Calvin will turn into?

We used the TV as a babysitter, but we watched PBS and educational programs. My husband freaks out when we lose the dish due to storms, so she grew up with it..but she also finished high school in the top 10% and has gone through college with either honor roll or dean’s list every semester…of course, she only has basic tv in Indianapolis, and there’s not much available. My husband looks just like Calvin in the third panel when he can’t watch his shows!

We don’t have a TV in our house. If I get one can I forget about doing yard work and all other endless chores?

Oh, the trials and tribulations of no TV…. Was great when camping or when at the cottage as a youth, but try it as you get older. Now if your computer was stolen … what would all of us do?

Well, since the burglar was broken into their home and stolen the items including the TV, the items will not be possible replaced for new ones. Living without the TV is hard to deal with in our lives. I ,for myself, couldn’t live without the TV because I need to know what it will be going on out there. sighhh! :-/ That’s tough life!

The last time I watched anything on TV was the president’s inauguration. I don’t miss TV at all.

I hardly ever watch TV, I never watch the news…they are just as bad as the rag mags. All my news comes from the internet. Being hooked on the internet is just as bad as the TV, just ask me, I’m struggling with a child hooked on the internet.

Sorry all but we had tv as kids growing up. Summer was boring no books to read, mom wouldn’t take ups to the library. TV at my parents quit my dad lasted only so long mom missed some of her shows then they got one. Some people do not care about reading nor do some have computers, tv keeps them company when they are by themselves. Go comics keeps me too busy haven’t been able to catch up on my reading. The ones who commented on my tv does that mean no paper, not hearing about current events including what is happening in Gulf Coast with oil spill, you don’t know what current events are going on. I like to watch court shows able to pass that knowledge to my daughter on how people sue over different things. Some important some not so.

My sister has a friend who’s daughter lived in books. When on computer internet go where books are and read. She will be going to National Guards and college. Smart girl. I don’t think she watch to much tv but some.

I grew up without much of anything fancy. Now I have all kinds of stuff. I miss being a rich kid.

Grew up on TV in the 1960’s. It started getting bad in the 1970 and by 1991, my wife & I decided to cut the cable (we live in an area that did not get broadcast reception). One of the BEST things we ever did! We talk more, read more, have real experiences to share and more easily recognize when some one is trying to shove SFBL agenda down our throats. Our four children & us have a DVD/VHS player hooked to the TV set but we’re in control over what they watch and for how long. Pathetic how some of our friend’s conversations are only about what’s on the Boob Tube. THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO LIFE! GET OUT THERE AND EXPERIENCE IT!!

Calvin handle’s adversity really well - until it’s his own.

It is important for kids to start learning early with supervision and participation then tv is good. But if you want pot luck raise your kid so he has to find his own devises . Great in a comic strip but our 7 children where raised with tv and teddy bears and we are proud of them all and that goes for grandchildren and great grandchildren who watch cartoons with us.

Small correction gweedo, Studendous Man’s arch-nemesis is Mom-Lady. Besides, didn’t Han Solo fry you in a Mos Eisley cantina a long time ago in a galaxy far far away? LOL.

Knowing what eating asparagus does to pee I would think Calvin would really like it.

This reminds me of a story my husband once told me about his former brother and sister-in-law. They didn’t believe in mind-numbing, brain-frying television — for their 5 kids … which is not to say that the house was television-free, because it wasn’t. They did have one t.v. — it was located in the parents’ room and only the parents were allowed to watch it (guess they didn’t care if their brains were fried or not!) … and whenever they went out but children would be left behind at home, the t.v. got locked up in the bedroom closet then the bedroom itself got locked up, just to make sure the kids did absolutely NO television watching while the parents were gone! Can you imagine???!!! Really great hypocritical parenting going on in that house. If television wasn’t good enough for the kids (even educational programming like PBS), then the parents should have set a better example and not had it for themselves either. It’s no wonder the kids don’t have any respect for their parents today now that they’re all grown up and on their own. Who could possibly respect anyone that doesn’t practice what they preach … even if they are your own parents?!?!?

you know, when will calvin go to school and tell how his house got robbed? i’m not sure that it’s summer vacation for calvin yet.

Considering the stress of the cost of medical in my life =adversity - going to bed or watching cable the only sane option in my 66 year old life. I’d have gone nuts without the television. Gotta have some bubblegum for yer mind, y’know….not to mention keeping a light hold on the reins, and keeping my head up for His return. Have a great weekend, folks….

Go ahead & steal my flat screen. I’ll use the insurance money to buy a bigger 1 with 3D. Don’t despair Calvin, the future is bright with Netflix, Hulu, You Tube & on demand from your local cable provider. Death to asparagus & other nutritional veggies

At my son’s house they only have the computer service and telephone. Any television or current events they get through the computer. They’re only home for a few hours a day so they can’t see paying for cable plus they can limit the time my granddaughter watches programs and what she sees. They also like the option to pause the things they watch and get back to them when they get to sit back down again. I still love cuddling up on the couch with my husband and granddaughter and watching television. I guess that makes me old school!

i’m a kid (a bit older than calvin - i still don’t get how he learns all those big words. and goes through three christmases while staying six.) and we weren’t allowed tv when we were calvin’s age. now we’re all teenagers/tweens and we watch the occasional program. we’re all excellent readers and cherish whatever tv we get to watch. all i can say is, poor calvin. i know how it feels :(
