“Grunch” isn’t a word that comes up in conversation very often,. but it is pretty close to that horrible sound that metal and fibreglass make when being bashed out of place. Couldn’t have picked a better word myself.

Sometimes things run better as we have feared! Luck in missfortune!

Sort of a hybrid of “Grind” and “Crunch”.

Yes, I believe that would be the sound of a car going into a ravine.

Watterson was a genius, and I bet he didn’t have to pay for it either.

Hey yeah.. BATMAN ! Another favorite of mine when I was a kid….all those bad guys would come skulking in and Batman and Robin would mess them up. With all the appropriate sound effects…. like “biff”. and “pow” , etc. . Yeah, GRUNCH would have been a good one there.

I would ask my room mate what it sounds like when a car rolls into a ditch, but he was inside his friends house when it happened, a couple of weeks ago.

And on top of that, it went over 100 yards up the highway. So it was out of earshot.

Love the expressions in each and every pane, especially Calvin’s look in the last pane.

Remember all this started with G.R.O.S.S. Hobbes was right that Calvin has been a remarkably poor judge of what his mother cares about.

It’s actually Mom’s fault for leaving the car in neutral. The only way it could roll that way is if it’s in neutral with the parking brake not set. No kid could ever push a car that was properly parked.

Better jump into the good old time machine and go back and stop himself from doing something stupid. But then Calvin will likely talk himself into working the brakes and then to his own horror realize that his future self is still too short to reach the pedals.

The expressions are perfect – and notice Hobbes’ fuzzed tail in the first panel. Each panel is a work of art.

The drama button is cute, but the anticipation far exceeded the realization. It was like expecting a raging storm and getting a ‘tempest in a teapot’. An appropriate excerpt from The 1812 Overture would have sufficed, or for Western (oaters) fans The William Tell Overture, even. :o) Hi-yo Silver, Away…

I can’t say that this arc is my favorite because Watterson penned so many near-favorite arcs but among my near-favorite arcs this is one of my favorites.

I think “Gruntch” is a lot more likely to fall into the $5,000-plus range. Depending upon the age of the car, nowadays, a solid “Gruntch” can mean a totaled car.

Save that look Calvin buddy, might come in handy very soon.

If Calvin is a typical six-year old, and we assume, more or less that he is, he will lie like a rug to his mother and claim that someone was attempting to steal the car but was unsuccessful at driving it and therefore it went into the ditch. All Calvin needs to do is go over to the car and get the motor started to complete his scenario…have a great, and safe (non-Calvin) weekend folks…khp

You must be too young to remember that it used to be possible to put cars (even automatics) in or out of gear without a key in the ignition.

I had forgotten that. This scenario couldn’t happen today. When did that change occur?

thebird55, no, I’m certainly older than that, but all I saw was Calvin pushing the car. Pushing it doesn’t put it in neutral, but having it in gear prevents it from rolling.
