Just think, Calvin – someday you’ll be rich from your brilliant inventions, while Moe will be stuck sitting in a dark room all day thanks to too many concussions in his career as an NFL lineman.

Living well is the best revenge.

If the bully is too big for you to beat up, then make sure there are witnesses, let him beat you up, and then yelp like the dickens. He’ll get disciplined and you’ll get to keep your truck. Schools are taking a hard line against bullying these days.

Otoh if you think you might have a chance with a surprise attack, it’s very satisfying to sneak up and waste the SOB. I did that once in second grade to a large kid who was in 4th grade. He’d been bugging me for weeks. I tapped him on the back and when he turned around I let him have it in the belly. He was still writhing around on the ground when the rest of us lined up to go in from recess. Nobody paid attention to him, like karma made him invisible.

For some strange reason I never had a problem with bullies again.

Life is what it is - and if Calvin tells the principal and Moe gets detention (or whatever they do in Calvin-world) then that’s what it is.

Brutal Moe is a real bully. I don’t like how “bullying” has been extended to include calling someone a name. Doesn’t anyone remember “sticks and stones…” etc.? People have a right not to be assaulted; there’s no right not to have your feelings hurt.

(Olfart: Could you elaborate on the “same discipline” comment? I’ve heard of many stupid things schools are doing nowadays, but that’s new to me.)

Regarding Olfart’s “same discipline” comment: I just checked with my GF who teaches in elementary and middle schools. She says they teach the difference between “tattling” (“Miss Jones, Jeffy stuck his tongue out at me!”) and “telling” about real abuse. “Telling” is encouraged. “Tattling” is discouraged. I think Olfart may have confused the two policies.

Gee, I guess I’m old school. “slap him on the ears, poke him in the eye, kick him in the—”, well you get the idea. We’d both get suspended but I’d keep my truck and my dignity. Somehow I always saw a tear of pride in the old man’s eye as he scolded me and sent me to bed without supper.

The only way to deal with a bully is to stand up to him.

Or as the Beach Boys said:

“the bad guys know us and they leave us alone …”

    PS: Sherlock was great fun.

Zero tolerance equals zero brains for various school districts. The definition they follow is laughable to say the least. Especially if the bullied gets punished the same as the bully, i.e. if Calvin was to snitch on Moe.

P.S. This comic was drawn long before Zero Tolerance protocols were in place. Thus, I doubt Calvin would ever fear a reprisal from the school if he snitched. He would just have to fear reprisal from Moe. I feel for Calvin.

Been there. My way out was to tolerate it until my growth hormones had me bigger than the bullies. But even then, as soon as I became a geek, I got bullied by all the “cool kids” in high school. Where are the cool kids now? Not in as nice of jobs as I am. I get the last laugh.

I wonder if Watterson ever though about fast forwarding the strip to when the characters are now in their 30’s like they would be now?

I can see Moe running a junk yard and sitting at home watching wrestling on the television all night.

Patience is a virtue here. Walk past the bad guys in terms of time, and sooner or later they will go some other way and continue with their lives and you will go your way as well. If you belong to the Lord, remember that “vengeance is mine, saith the Lord..” He has ways unimagineable, although He also said that we could have one sword for self defense too, so there you are….I just pray them out of my life, and He has done that on several occasions….

morgueritem & sandfan: Here’s what I found on the PBS website: they’ve only got three Sherlock’s in the first series: “A Study In Pink”, “The Blind Banker”, and “The Great Game”, which are to be aired (10/24), 10/31, and 11/7 (but I’d still check your local listings, just in case).

I read where it was shown in the U.K. to the “Sherlock Holmes Society” and they gave it a huge thumbs up so if they approve, then it must be good! (I say this because I have it recorded but haven’t quite found the time to watch it yet. Hopefully later on tonight!)

Re “Sherlock” - yes, it will be running for the next 2 weekends on PBS Masterpiece Mystery. The series is also available on DVD (I’ve pre-ordered it!!!) and sounds like BBC One in the UK has renewed the series for Season 2…. so I will be anxiously awaiting the availability of Season 2 on PBS AND the DVDs!!

I’ve encountered my share of bullies growing up. Then one day by chance I got to see a glimpse of one’s family life, if you could call it that. The kid’s dad was a real A-hole. After that, I hated AND pitied him.
