If my auntie Elsie was still alive, today would be her birthday – and she would be 108. Auntie Elsie – my Mum’s older sister – was born on November 11 1916 so the First World War ended on her second birthday. My auntie Elsie died in November 2011 – just a few days after her 95th birthday.
My daddy served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He was trained in reconnaissance and was involved in the containment and transport of POWS in Remagen, Germany, at the end of the war. He never spoke about his military experiences and I only learned of them when I found records he had kept locked away.
My Grandfather served in WWI , in the calvary. He said they ate their horses to survive. He was saved by a blister, trench foot. He was in the hospital when his entire battalion was wiped out in battle. Paschendale? Not sure now.
Salute to those who served. My time was worth it. But please don’t ask about pushups. At my current age, even if I could assume the position it would take a forklift to get me on my feet again :-)
I only got my favorite uncle to talk in detail about his experience fighting up thorough Italy and into Germany. It was brutal and tough on both sides. He was very ill and knew the end was coming. I guess he wanted to share and remember just one more time…

Smart man not to take on the challenge. My mind would think, “I can still do that!” While my body says, “Try it and die fat boy!”

Oh boy—now Red’s dad is acting like Calvin’s!

I probably could still do ten, maybe twenty if I had a drill instructor yelling at me.

Bring back my knees and back (and a few other problems) from before the military worked ‘em over and we’ll see.

We don’t like to be reminded that we aren’t as fit as we were back then.

Dad needs to get back in the game. RBG was still doing 20 push-ups every day at the age of 83.

Veterans did what had to be done when it had to be done, and we honor them for that.
