Well, the cable could’ve gone out and the power is still on.

Must be the ’70’s. The decade of power cuts and 3-day weeks.

Do they still have coin operated electric/gas meters, a sort of pay as you go system?

And yes this really happens. Definitely has happened to me, with a different program of course.

Probably the only couple in the world still watching TV on a tube screen.
