    Not to be un-romantic, but the legal aspects of marriage need to be considered. Dealing with the insurance, medical decisions, etc. was so much easier. You still should have power of attorney for one another, but being able to produce that marriage license makes a lot of things easier.

    There are still many legal benefits to marriage. It was not until I reached retirement age and learned about spousal Social Security benefits that I was especially glad I had been married to my first wife for more than ten years. No points for live-ins.

    My second wife and I married after a few years together, when she realized I would not be allowed to visit her in a hospital room unless we were married.
