I grew up mostly in Colorado. Colorado beat Nebraska once between the time I was capable of paying attention to football and the time I graduated from college.
When Colorado beat (#1!) Nebraska 62-36 in 2001, I was rooting, at the end, for Colorado to go for another one and then go for two to make it an even 70.
I actually went to Tennessee, so my favorite teams are Tennessee and whoever plays Nebraska. (Third favorite: whoever plays Alabama.)
But now, talented Nebraska sophomores and juniors can easily transfer to Florida or USC, where the NIL money is bigger and the women don’t have to wear parkas through March.
How will Nebraska remain relevant? Competitive?
Something was wrong with the old system, but something is wronger with a system that makes me have any empathy for Nebraska.
I sometimes wonder if we would be better off having those who wish to play professionally after high school just go into a minor league system, and leave college sports as recreational activities. If other parties, like the media and athletic apparel companies, can’t find a way to make money on the former, they should just move along.
